As the global demographic dividend fades and manufacturing labor costs continue to rise, companies’ demand for automated production is growing steadily, with industrial robots playing a pivotal role in smart manufacturing.
As the global demographic dividend fades and manufacturing labor costs continue to rise, businesses are increasingly turning to automated production. Industrial robots play a pivotal role in smart manufacturing and serve as a key indicator of a nation’s technological innovation and manufacturing prowess. An industrial robot comprises three major core components: a reducer, servo motors, and a control system. Among these, the reducer is the most critical functional component, accounting for 33% to 38% of the total cost of robot manufacturing.
In the field of mechanical transmission, a reducer is an intermediate device that connects the power source to the actuator. Typically, it reduces rotational speed and increases torque by meshing a small gear on the input shaft with a larger gear on the output shaft, thereby converting high-speed power from an electric motor, internal combustion engine, or similar source into lower-speed, higher-torque output. Currently, well-established and standardized types of reducers include cylindrical gear reducers, worm gear reducers, planetary reducers, planetary gear reducers, RV reducers, servo‑planetary reducers, harmonic drive reducers, and harmonic reducers. In industrial robotics, reducers are primarily categorized into two main types: RV reducers and harmonic reducers.
Although China’s industrial robot market has grown rapidly, accounting for roughly one-third of the global market share, the country has long relied on imports for industrial robot reducers, a dependency that has constrained further development of its robotics industry. Currently, the reducer market is dominated by two major Japanese firms. Globally, key manufacturers include Nabtesco, Harmonic Drive Systems, Shinano Kenshi, Sumitomo, Harmonic Drive, Nantong Zhenkang, Zhongda Lide, and Zhongji Kemei. Among them, Harmonic Drive’s harmonic reducers and Nabtesco’s RV reducers, as industry leaders, together command more than half of the global market for industrial robot reducers.
